Bring Together People, Food and Planet: A better food system
October 18 @ 7:00 pm
This is the Canberra leg of an Australian speaking tour by visiting US academic and activist, Dr Eric Holt-Gimenez. Dr Holt-Gimenez is Executive Director of Food First (California) – a non-government institute that works, through research, education and action, to end the injustices that cause hunger. Eric brings a broad perspective as an advocate for ‘farmer to farmer’ learning and local food systems, as well as recognition of the economic and political structures that dominate our current food system.
The organisers state: "we are bringing together local, national and international perspectives on the fight for a better food system: one that nourishes and supports human beings and community protects and rehabilitates our natural environment, and brings together people, food and planet. We want to ask the question: Is our industrial food system broken? Or is it, in fact, performing to its current specifications, albeit at great social, environment and cultural cost? We are spending less on our food than earlier generations - but that food is making us obese and sick. Control over the food system has concentrated into fewer hands, generating great wealth for a few but dislocation and poverty for many. Our soils are being degraded at an alarming rate and our methods of food production are endangering our environment. But exciting ideas, like regenerative farming, sharing the commons and the international movement for food sovereignty led by farmers and farm workers, do show a path to a better food future."
